Cantabria

Agri-Food Business
Cantabria’s agri-food sector has a structure similar to that of the rest of Spain. It is noteworthy for two sectors:
- Fish preserves: the largest semi-preserves sector in Spain.
- Dairy products: among the most important bovine livestock production in Spain and large processing plants in the region.
In addition, other branches of agri-food production have a significant presence, including other fish products, cocoa and coffee, and packaged bakery products.
The industrial food and beverage sector represents 15.4% of Cantabria’s total industrial volume.
Renewable Energies Sector
Bio-fuels also play an important role in the autonomous community’s energy policy, with several projects which will lead national production of biodiesel and bioethanol.
Cantabria’s coastal regions have also enabled it to innovate in the area of tidal and wave power. Various experiments led by the University of Cantabria have created prototypes which seek to revolutionize the renewable energy sector. The Institute of Environmental Hydraulics (IH Cantabria) has over 60 researchers and specialists in this field. They form the Oceanographic and Coastal Engineering Group, as well as the Underwater Outlet and Environmental Hydraulics Group, giving the area the best in development capabilities.
In addition, the Cantabrian coast will have one of the world’s first wave energy farms, rated at 1.25 MW.
