The number of Spanish regions with a GDP higher than the European average went up from four to seven in 2007

Last year seven Spanish regions exceeded the national GDP average (23,396 euros), and also outstripped the figure for the EU 27 (24,700 euros). The wealthiest regions in terms of per capita GDP were therefore: The Basque Country (30,599 euros), Madrid (29,965 euros), Navarre (29,483 euros), Catalonia (27,445 euros), Aragon (25,361 euros), The Balearic Islands (25,238 euros) and La Rioja (24,717 euros).

The figures show a reduction in the difference between Spanish and European per capita GDP, which in 2006 were 22,152 and 24,500 euros, respectively.

The list of regions that grew the most last year was headed by Aragon, with an increase in GDP in real terms of 4.5% (seven tenths higher than the national average), followed by Castilla-La Mancha (4.2%), Galicia and La Rioja (both with 4.0%).

All the Spanish regions registered growth figures significantly higher than the figure for the UE-27 as a whole at 2.9% for 2007. The region with the lowest growth figure was Asturias, the GDP of which went up by 3.6%
