Spain to open Europe’s first hydrogen energy storage plant

Close to 1.7 million euros is to be invested in the new plant, which will be the first of its kind in Spain and Europe.

The installation is to be integrated into a pioneering project developed by Gas Natural, the Galicia regional government and the Galicia Sotavento Foundation. Its objective is to study the suitability of hydrogen as a means of storing energy employing the excess energy from Sotavento’s Wind Park.

Energy is thereby stored for later use in the production of electrical energy when there is a lack of wind or a peak in demand.

The Sotavento Wind Park is the ideal location for the installation since one of its goals is to undertake R&D activities and to be a research, training and dissemination center for renewable energy.
